UP CLIMBING #16
Bimonthly climbing and mountaineering magazine
INDOOR CLIMBING
Once upon a time climbing was only on rock. But, already from the beginning of the 1900s, some top climbers began to train dry: pull-ups, push-ups, weights, until the first ones climb the brick walls and railway beds. Emilio Comici, John Gill, Reinhold Messner, Jim Collins, all pioneers of forms of training and climbing already projected towards the future.
At the end of the 1980s, dry training moved definitively indoors, with the birth of first walls in gyms, parallel to the first ones competitions on plastic.
After 2000 indoor climbing had a absolute boom, certainly not just competitive, becoming in a short time one of the most loved and practiced sports, both in the cities and elsewhere, with tens of thousands of practitioners of all ages, and with a large female presence.
This issue of Up climbing seeks to take stock of the situation, with reference above all to Italian indoor, but with flashes and focuses on places and characters from other countries, give it United States to Japan, from Holland to Russia.
We will see how the main cities experienced the transition from garage walls to the large rooms of today, we will analyze the methods of attendance, i problemthe connected to education, at professional figures, to the sensitivity of many newbies, also following the history and events of famous urban gyms.
The aim is to develop a debate and a non-random drawing that portrays the complex world of contemporary indoors, with his merits, his limits, his projections about the future.
